Donnie Darko Photography Light v.s. Dark symbolism

Donnie Darko was by far one of the darkest movies I've ever seen. The movie concept itself didn't seem to dark but the dark lighting of the movie seemed to make it that way. The movie also seemed to trick you with the lighting. There seemed to be an aurora surrounding the character played by Patrick Swayze and a sense of darkness around Jake Ghyllenhaal. When it turns out to be the complete opposite. The movie also had a lot of monotone colors through out it. This lead to a feeling of depression through out the movie. It is amazing how watching a movie with such dark lighting can make someone watching it feel depressed.
